FAQs

  • It only costs £5 per head for adults to come on a guided walking tour.  School-aged children accompanied by a paying adult are not charged.

If you want a private walking tour you still only pay £5 per head for adults or a minimum of £30 if less than 6 people attend.

  • All our guides are happy to give their time and expertise for free.

  • All of the guides offering King’s Lynn Town Guide Walks have undergone an intensive 10-month council-approved training course and have passed both a written and a practical examination based on the standards set by the Institute of Tourist Guiding.

If successful, the Guides are awarded their prestigious Town Guides at a badging ceremony conducted by the Borough Mayor in the very historic Trinity Guildhall.

Once welcomed in as a Town Guide the training continues with regular annual refresher courses while also undertaking training on bespoke tours.

  • The money raised by King’s Lynn Town Guides is given to local good causes and charities on an annual basis. Since the Town Guides were formed in 1977 about £100,000 has been given away.

  • Most of the Guided Walks last approximately two hours at a strolling pace. However, private walks can be tailored to suit individual needs. Unless clearly stated otherwise, the distance covered is short. Most of the time is spent listening to interesting information.

  • If you are paying for car parking, we recommend that you pay for 3 hours. This means that you are not left anxious at the end of the walk and have plenty of time to return to your vehicle.

  • Yes, you can, but there may be some limitations. Wherever possible the guide would try to be inclusive. However, there may be some places where full access may not be possible.

  • Walks take place in all kinds of weather – sunshine, wind, and rain, through the season. Come dressed in appropriate clothing to ensure your enjoyment. The guide may adapt the route to take account of poor weather and only on very rare occasions of extreme weather events will we cancel a walk to protect both you and the guide from danger.

  • No, although we would encourage you to stick to the end to get the most out of the experience. As the guide shares some responsibility for your health and safety while on the walk, it would be courteous to let her or him know of your departure if you decide to leave. Many of our guests are happy to chat with the guide after the walk to pick up further ideas and recommendations of other places to see etc.

  • Some of the walks may look the same on paper but will be different in experience. For example, the most popular walk – Historic Lynn – always covers more or less the same route. However, each guide will talk about the history and the buildings in their own way (reflecting their own interests and expertise), meaning that each of these walks is a unique experience.

We offer walks on a variety of topics. Each of these Walks will reflect the emphasis given in the title, though there may be some overlap with the material in the traditional Historic Lynn Walk.

The content of a bespoke walk is unique to that walk and is agreed when the private booking is made. (See ‘What is a Private Group Walk?’ below.)

  • The Guides are more than happy to take privately arranged walks. These can be tailored to suit any theme or length and are available all year round.

There are two types of Private Group Walk.

Some people want to go on one of our advertised Walk topics, but they want to go with a group of friends or colleagues, and they want to go on a date and time that suits them. So, for example, a group of friends might want to do the Historic Lynn Walk at 10:30am on a particular Saturday; a club group might want to do the Smugglers and Sailors walk at 5:00pm on a particular Thursday.

Some groups may have a particular interest, and in addition to wanting a Walk on a particular date and time, also want a topic that we have not advertised. So, for example, a church group might want a Walk on Margery Kempe in King’s Lynn on a particular Wednesday afternoon. Although we cannot guarantee to be able to meet all requests, get in touch with us. We will try to arrange a Guided Walk to reflect your particular interest.

If you can’t make one of our scheduled walks and would like to get a group of people together, then a private tour may be an ideal way to show off the town for corporate or family events.

Many local companies use a private tour as part of a team-building event or just as a staff night out, taking in a Historic Lynn in the early evening followed by dinner in an old-town restaurant.

  • The King’s Lynn Town Guides has several aims the principle of which is the provision of professional guided tours of the town to all wishing to undertake one.

The Guides also aim to develop new tours, covering all aspects of the town’s history, in doing so encouraging both the local population and visitors to learn more of the little known but interesting aspects of King’s Lynn.

The introduction of the Town to school and student groups is also a priority and the Guides have a dedicated team responsible for both Out-Reach to local youth and student groups and liaison with other of the Town’s historic organisations.

Assisting other civic groups responsible for the town’s heritage and buildings.

Promoting King’s Lynn’s unique historical heritage to locals, visitors and the media.

  • Yes. Well-behaved dogs are welcome on our walks.

However, there are certain buildings where your dog will not be allowed in. Your tour guide will make these known to you as you go around.
